Immersion for Yoga Students & Teachers
History, Mythology & Philosophy
Yoga is a living, breathing practice shaped by centuries of cultural, political and spiritual context. In this module, we ask the questions your teachers might not have been able to answer: Where does yoga actually come from? What did it mean then? What does it mean now? And most importantly, how do we stay true to yoga?
What we will explore together
This module is for anyone who's ever felt there was more to yoga than what you get in a standard class. If you've heard teachers quote texts without really understanding where those texts came from or what was happening in the world when they were written. If you sense that yoga is bigger than poses and you want some help navigating some big texts, this is a great place to start..
We start with the simple premise that you deserve to understand what you are practising, not just how to make poses but what they mean.
-
Yoga didn't arrive fully formed on a mat in a studio. It evolved across centuries, shaped by different cultures, political landscapes and spiritual lineages. We trace those lineages so you can see where your practice actually comes from with the appreciation that yoga has always been evolving, is still evolving and we are apart of that evolution.
-
Many teachers quote yoga texts but why do those texts matter? What was happening when they were written and how do they relate to our practice today? This module enquires into cultural context and considers geo-politics to contemplate the differing translations and the original intention of key yogic texts.
-
Identifying key mythological figures, their role in the Hindu pantheon and its relationship to yoga.
-
Patanjali’s 8-limbs or “Ashtanga“ are often referenced as the basis of modern yoga. We will discuss the origins, meaning and applications of these limbs.
-
Yama and Niyama are the first two limbs of Patanjali’s Ashtanga system.
The whole system goes from gross to subtle. Yama gives guidance for interacting with the world, niyama governs the inner world of the practitioner… Without them, you might have a flexible body, but you don't have a yoga practice.

No. I never planned to do a yoga teacher training myself but I wanted to learn from someone I could trust, and wasn’t trying to sell me their doctrine. I have designed this program for:
· Yoga Enthusiasts: Deepen your understanding of yoga theory, gain insights to enrich your practice.
· Future Teachers: Aspiring yoga instructors preparing for teacher certification.
· YTT Graduates: Individuals with yoga certification committed to refining their practice and expanding their teaching tool-kit.
Come as you are and prepare to consolidate and enrich your yoga practice to a place of deep understanding and embodiment.

For many of us, the study of yoga theory only begins after our first teacher training. This course is the perfect place to integrate theory, practice designing and teaching classes, finding your voice and building community.
-
As much as I love the practice of yoga, even MORE I love the way it has shaped my life and the community that we have built around the practice of yoga. Being in the company of people who are willing to take action to improving the quality of their lives, willing to hold the truth lightly as a delicate unfolding flower. I am willing to be wrong if it will take me closer to the truth. Are you willing to reconsider what you know about yoga?
“You realise the road is the goal and that you are always on the road,”

More than 20 years of yoga practice, 10 years of yoga teaching and several YTTs in, I am excited to keep learning and I hope a droplet of my enthusiasm will reignite your practice.
-
YES! You could just sign up for the 90min practice. But you might get curious to join the full immersion. Here we unpack why and how our yoga practice works. In each immersion, we:
Consider different approaches to practice
Get support developing your practice
Practice more separately
Compare notes on practice
Collectively contribute to the evolution of yoga practice.
-
Yes. Each immersion is modularised so provided we still have capacity, you are SO welcome to drop in for the topics that interest you.
-
After a masterclass and a workshop of inspiration, you go home with a practice journal. A place to record your practice, journaling prompts, a 1-on-1 call with me and a group check in to learn from each others experiences.
-
You have one hour to indulge your curiosity, clarify any confusion and work on either your embodiment or intellectualise the practice. As a yoga therapist, Stef customises the sessions to serve the evolution of your practice.
